The Faculty of Pharmacy discussed the Master\u2019s Degree thesis, tagged” The Possible Protective Effect of Omega-7 on Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in a Rat Model”\u00a0\u00a0 by Shurouq Hussam Mahmood and her supervisor, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ali Faris Hassan, in the Pharmacology and Toxicology department.\u00a0The thesis aimed to evaluate The Possible Protective Effect of Omega-7 on Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Rats by measuring the following: blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (sCr),Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-\u03b1), Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and Interleukin-1\u03b2(1\u03b2) in serum, while renal tissue homogenates were used for the estimation of Glutathione Peroxidase-1(GPX-1), Superoxide Dismutase-1(SOD-1), reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA). In addition, a histological examination of the rat\u2019s renal sections was also carried out.\u00a0The results showed that Treatment of rats with omega-7 had led to significant reduction in BUN and sCr levels serum and significant decline in the activities of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-\u03b1 and IL-1\u03b2, and significant reduction in the level of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 compared to cisplatin group. Moreover, Treatment of rats with omega-7 showed significant elevation in the activities of anti-oxidant enzymes (GPX-1, SOD-1, reduced GSH and CAT) and significant reduction of MDA level when compared to Cisplatin (positive control) group. Histopathological examination showed marked improvements in kidney sections of rats treated with omega-7 compared to cisplatin group.\u00a0The results confirmed that omega-7 showed a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity that could be attributed to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity.<\/span><\/p>\n
