Prof. May Mohammed Jawad Al-Mudhafar <\/strong>in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department.\u00a0The study aimed to synthesize new isatin-chalcone conjugates <strong>6(a\u2013j) <\/strong>and 5-fluoroisatin-chalcone conjugates<strong> 9(a\u2013g), which<\/strong>\u00a0were synthesized in light of previous research that showed the modifications of the isatin moiety and its analogs led to the synthesis of many derivatives that have different biological activities. The synthesis of isatin-chalcone conjugates <strong>6(a\u2013j)<\/strong> was done through two routes, while the synthesis of 5-fluoroisatin-chalcone conjugates <strong>9(a\u2013g)<\/strong> was done through one route.\u00a0Proton-nuclear magnetic resonance (\u00b9H-NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to confirm the chemical structures of the newly prepared compounds.\u00a0The final compounds were evaluated by the well diffusion technique for their antimicrobial activities against groups of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and against fungi, using amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, and fluconazole, respectively, as standard drugs. For isatin-chalcone conjugates <strong>6(a\u2013j)<\/strong>, the antimicrobial activity of compounds (<strong>6b and 6e)<\/strong>\u00a0was more potent than that of other derivatives. While for 5-fluoroisatin-chalcone conjugates<strong> 9(a\u2013g)<\/strong>, the compounds (<strong>9d<\/strong> and <strong>9e)<\/strong>\u00a0were more potent than other derivatives.
