Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the Scientific Affairs Unit at the University of Baghdad\/College of Pharmacy held an in-person scientific seminar entitled \u201cPhytochemical and Clinical Investigation of Amaranthus Viridis<\/em>,\u201d <\/em>delivered by Pharmacist Noor Sabah Jaafar, the PhD student at the Pharmacognosy and Medicinal Plants Department. The seminar aimed to define this herb and its importance. The seminar included several topics, including a description of the phenotypic characteristics of the herb that grows naturally in Iraq and is used in some countries as a rich source of amino acids, as well as a discussion of its traditional uses. As for its chemical components, the herb is an important source of a group of compounds with therapeutic effectiveness, such as phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acids), steroids, and carotenoids. Studies have shown that this herb has various therapeutic effects, as it is used to reduce the level of sugar and cholesterol in the blood. It is also considered an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and it is considered an effective antibacterial. Studies have shown the effectiveness of this remedy against certain types of cancer cells, such as HT-29, HpeG 2, and MCF-7. The scientific seminar concluded that this herb is important and that it is an important source of some types of compounds with important therapeutic effects.<\/span><\/p>\n
