The Faculty of Pharmacy discussed the master’s thesis tagged” Phytochemical Investigation of Iraqi Hyacinthus orientalis L. different parts” by Noor Mohammed Shareef and her supervisor, lecturer Dr. Thukaa Zuhair abdul-Jalil in the Pharmacognosy and Medicinal Plants Department.\u00a0The thesis aims were divided into two distinct parts, the first is a phytochemical investigation of three parts of the plant (flowers, leaves, and bulbs) and the analysis of chemical constituents, and the second is an evaluation of the pharmacological activity (cytotoxic activity).\u00a0 Thesis topics include Each one of the three different parts of the plant (flowers, leaves, and bulbs)that were extracted. The Isolation step was achieved by preparative layer chromatography (PLC) and reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The structure of the isolated compounds was identified by using analytical TLC, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet (UV), and liquid chromatography mass spectrometer (LC-MS). These isolated compounds were confirmed as stigma sterol, apigenin, caffeic acid, vanillin, baicalein, and rosmarinic acid.\u00a0The results revealed the presence of stigma sterol in petroleum ether fraction of flowers, scopoletin in chloroform fraction of bulbs, caffeic acid, apigenin, vanillin, baicalein, rutin, quercetin and rosmarinic acid in ethyl acetate fraction and n-butanol fraction distributed differently on three parts of plant. The second part of the research was concerned with the assessment of the possible cytotoxic effect of ethyl acetate fraction from three parts of the plant (flowers, leaves, and bulbs) on the breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). It showed that the most effective fraction on the MCF-7 cell line was the flower ethyl acetate fraction, followed by the bulbs ethyl acetate fraction, and the least fraction was leaves ethyl acetate putting in mind that the cytotoxic effect was concentration dependent for all plant parts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
