The Faculty of Pharmacy discussed the PhD Dissertation tagged” Preparation, Characterization, and In-Vitro _ In-Vivo<\/em> Evaluation of Electrospun Nanofibers for wound Dressing Loaded Fusidic Acid as a Controlled Release Antimicrobial Drug” by Ahmad Abdulhussain Yosef<\/strong> and the supervisor Professor Dr. Ahmed Abbas Hussein<\/strong> in the Pharmaceutics Department.\u00a0The dissertation aimed to develop a new structural material containing a mixture of synthetic and biopolymers to produce nanofibers loaded with antibacterial agents by using an electrospinning device. The main challenge is to adjust the polymer solution ratio to control the thickness of nanofibers in order to achieve an initial burst release from the surface and prolonged release from the inner layers of nanofibers. The acceptable diameter range should form an isolation barrier on the wound site to halt the bacterial invasion, maintain moisture content that is required for wetting of the polymer and have good mechanical flexibility; to achieve therapeutic goal against microbial infection.\u00a0The concept of the dissertation is based on electrospinning technology, which has been introduced as a new drug delivery system, particularly when used for topical administration, and shows excellent results in the treatment of wound infections and skin ulcers. The principle of the electrospinning process is applying high voltage current to a combination of\u00a0 polymer solutions containing synthetic polymers (Polyvinyl alcohol) and biopolymers (Chitosan) in a specific ratio to carry an antibacterial agent (Fusidic acid) in the form of electrospun nanofiber mats to be used as wound dressings. The results proved that the prepared electrospun nanofibers could show improvement in the loading of the antibacterial agent to provide initial burst release and controlled release from the inner layers of the nanofibers and use as wound dressing loaded with an antimicrobial agent in the treatment of skin infections and ulcers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
