Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Al-Khateeb, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Ibn Sina Unit in the College of Pharmacy at University of Baghdad, organized an e-scientific lecture was given by Assistant Professor Dr. Samer Imad Mohammed, a faculty member in the Clinical Pharmacy department, on the optimal use of the drug in elderly patients. The lecture, entitled “Drug prescribing for older adults,” aims to identify the most important issues facing the process of dispensing medications for this category of patients, how to identify physiological changes in the body and their impact on the response to treatment, and the most effective ways to confront any problem that may occur due to the use of medications in order to ensure safe and effective use of medicines, herbs, and nutritional supplements in this category of patients. The lecture covered a variety of topics, including: differences in drug kinetics in elderly patients and their impact on the amount of drug doses, as well as the optimal methods of drug dispensing; knowledge of physiological changes caused by age and their relationship to drug kinetics and the amount of drug response; and the definition of the most important scientific resources approved for the purpose of optimal drug use and how to use these resources.
