Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Scientific Affairs Unit at the University of Baghdad/ College of Pharmacy, held an in-person workshop entitled “Induction Techniques for Hind Limb Ischemia in Mouse Models” delivered by Rasha Mabrouk mounea, a Master student at the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department.
The workshop aimed to develop a mouse model of hind limb ischemia, resembling human ischemia. An animal model of hind limb ischemia (HLI) was developed by ligating and excising the distal external iliac artery and femoral artery in mice, and to study the complications of diabetes and atherosclerosis.
The workshop included several topics including various surgical approaches for inducing hind limb ischemia in mice, like femoral artery ligation (FAL), femoral artery resection, electrocoagulation, laser ablation, or chemical ablation, with a detailed explanation of each method.
The workshop concluded with an evaluation of gene therapies, cell therapies, and pharmacological agents, and an examination of the mechanisms of vascular growth, identifying the factors affecting the research.
