Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem AlKhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Pharmacy / University of Baghdad, held an in-person workshop entitled “Proper Steps in Laboratory Work”, delivered by Assistant Professor Taghreed Nidham- Aldeen Omar, a faculty member in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department. The workshop included an introduction to the importance of workers in scientific laboratories having awareness of the existence of health and safety standards or how to comply with these standards, and that laxity and indifference to them leads to harmful results. The workshop also addressed the most important preventive guidelines that students are instructed and emphasized to follow. The main points of dealing with chemicals in laboratories were also highlighted, namely: dividing chemicals according to their types and the extent of their danger, how to deal with them, and the correct storage of chemicals. It was also explained how chemicals are divided in terms of danger into toxic substances, corrosive substances, oxidizing substances, carcinogens, inflammatory substances, etc. Personal protection tools, wrong practices in laboratories, emergency equipment, the importance of original identification labels, proper storage, and the mechanism of action when an accident occurs in the laboratory.
