Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the University Psychological Counseling Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held a scientific discussion session entitled “Cosmeceuticals: Bridging Beauty and Science,” presented by a group of students from the Pharmacine Club (Student Scientific Research Club), under the supervision of Dr. Nawar Mikhael Toma, lecturer in the Pharmaceutics Department.
The session aimed to introduce students and participants to the correct scientific and medical uses of common compounds in the field of cosmetics and skincare, clarify the difference between cosmetic and therapeutic applications, analyze the marketing claims associated with such products, and highlight the essential role of the pharmacist in guiding consumers toward safe and effective use.
The session included several topics, including an introductory overview of the layers of the skin and methods to enhance the penetration of active ingredients. A breakdown of skincare routines and the types of commonly used cosmetic preparations. Also focused on the scientific analysis of the mechanisms of glutathione and tranexamic acid in skin lightening and regeneration, with clarification of the differences between medical and cosmetic uses. An evaluation of the effectiveness of collagen-based products, whether as supplements or topical formulations, and whether their claimed benefits are scientifically supported or mainly driven by marketing. The session also included an evaluation of marketing strategies in the cosmetic industry, with a strong emphasis on the pharmacist’s role in educating consumers and interpreting product components.
The seminar concluded that there is a pressing need to strengthen scientific awareness among consumers, avoid reliance on promotional claims without consulting specialists, and reaffirm the pharmacist’s role as a trustworthy scientific link between products and users.
This session marked the first scientific activity of the Pharmacine Club for the current academic year, and its organization reflects the college’s ongoing efforts to encourage research, critical thinking, and the development of scientific reasoning among students. It also highlights the importance of their role as future healthcare professionals in raising community awareness, particularly in light of the rapid growth of the cosmetic product market and the abundance of related information.
