Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Scientific Affairs Unit at the College of Pharmacy/ University of Baghdad held an in-person workshop entitled
” Glargine/Lixisenatide combination therapy in the Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus”, delivered by pharmacist Hasan Ali Owayez, master student at the Clinical Pharmacy Department.

The workshop aimed to introduce the pharmacological rationale and clinical benefits of Glargine/Lixisenatide combination therapy, a fixed-ratio combination of insulin glargine and lixisenatide, in managing uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.

The workshop included several topics like: the scientific basis for combining basal insulin with GLP-1 receptor agonists, mechanism of action of glargine and lixisenatide and their synergistic effect, clinical trial outcomes regarding HbA1c reduction and hypoglycemia risk and guideline-based recommendations for Glargine/Lixisenatide combination therapy use in clinical practice.

The workshop concluded that raising academic and clinical awareness about modern combination therapies is essential, and staying updated with scientific advancements ensures optimal therapeutic outcomes and improved patient quality of life.
