The College of Pharmacy/ University of Baghdad, mourns the passing of Professor Anwar Hussein Alwan, who passed away on November 5, 2025, after a distinguished career marked by innovation in drug delivery science and advancements in patient care.
Dr. Hussein was born in Iraq in 1937 and graduated from the College of Pharmacy, University of Baghdad, in 1959. He later joined the University of Kentucky, USA, in 1973, where he served as Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Analysis and established one of the most successful research programs in the United States until his retirement in 2000.
He was a pioneer in dosage form design and nasal drug delivery systems, and among the first to demonstrate that modifying the molecular structure of a drug can enhance its safety and efficacy.
Dr. Hussein was awarded more than 50 patents, and his research generated over $14 million in revenue for the university, significantly contributing to strengthening the College of Pharmacy’s reputation in pharmaceutical innovation and technology.
