The faculty of pharmacy discussed the Phd thesis tagged ” Phytochemical Investigation and Preliminary Assessment of the Pharmacological Activities for the Leaves of Tropaeolum majus L. Plant Cultivated in Iraq” by Mazin Saleem Shakir and his supervisor Professor Dr. Enas J. Kadhim in the Pharmacognosy and medicinal plants department. The thesis aim was to conduct a phytochemical analysis of Tropaeolum majus L. species cultivated in Iraq and assess the antibacterial activity against {( Escherichia coli), ( Salmonella Typhimurium), ( Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and ( Staphylococcus aureus)}, antiviral activity { against coronavirus 229E }, and cytotoxic activity { against normal oral epithelial cells (OEC) and breast cancer cell (MDA-MB-231)}. The results demonstrate the isolation, identification and quantification of eight compounds { ( 2-acetyl phloroglucinol,5-O-methyl,3-O-glucoside), (2-acetyl phloroglucinol,5-O-glucoside), ( naringenin-7-O-glucoside), ( genistein), ( methyl caffeate), ( hesperetin-7-O-glucoside), ( arbutin), and ( rutin)} by using different techniques (thin layer chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry). The second part of the research showed that the leaves of the plant have good antibacterial, antiviral activities, and no cytotoxic activity on the used cell lines.
