Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held an in-person workshop entitled “Arabic Language in the Age of Technology: Challenges and Solutions,” delivered by Assistant Lecturer Narges Jabbar Saleh.
The workshop aimed to highlight the current status of the Arabic language in the rapid digital transformation and to clarify the impact of modern technology on its use and dissemination. It also sought to enhance participants’ awareness of the linguistic challenges facing Arabic in the digital space. Furthermore, the workshop aimed to enable participants to distinguish between proper and improper uses of the Arabic language on social media platforms, while encouraging them to propose practical solutions that contribute to preserving the Arabic language and strengthening its digital presence, thereby reinforcing its connection to cultural and social identity.
The workshop included several topics, including a discussion of the impact of modern technology on the Arabic language and a review of the challenges it faces in the digital environment, encompassing linguistic, technical, and cultural challenges. It also addressed manifestations of improper language use on social media, mechanisms for promoting correct usage, and the presentation of practical initiatives and ideas aimed at supporting and developing the Arabic language in a manner that keeps pace with the requirements of the digital age.
The workshop concluded that technology is not inherently an adversary of the Arabic language; rather, the real threat lies in its misuse, not in the tool itself. It affirmed that the Arabic language possesses the flexibility and capacity to keep pace with the demands of the digital age when technology is properly harnessed in its service. Moreover, the workshop emphasized that the Arabic language would endure as long as its speakers remain committed to preserving it and that it is capable of vitality and renewal in every age when provided with care, awareness, and responsible use.
