Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, a group of fourth-year students (PharmD) at the University Of Baghdad College Of Pharmacy conducted a scientific visit to the Poisoning Consultation Center (P.C.C.) at the Medical City Directorate on Thursday, April 30, 2026. The visit was supervised by a group of faculty members.
The visit aimed to familiarize students with the operational framework of the center, the methodologies used in detecting substance toxicity, and the equipment employed in this field. It also sought to strengthen the integration of practical applications with the theoretical concepts covered in their coursework, thereby contributing to the preparation of well-qualified pharmacists with advanced scientific and practical skills. This initiative aligns with the College of Pharmacy’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education), by promoting applied learning and linking academic knowledge with healthcare practices, ultimately enhancing the competence of future healthcare professionals and improving the quality of services provided to the community.
The visit included a comprehensive presentation by specialist pharmacist Farah Mohammed Rafaa about the center’s operational procedures, the most common poisoning cases, appropriate management strategies, the available medications for this purpose, and their optimal use according to specialized scientific references. Furthermore, the specialized team at the center facilitated student exposure to the principal diagnostic tests utilized in the detection of various toxicological conditions. The visit also included a guided tour of the center’s units, during which students were introduced to practical methodologies employed in the examination and analysis of poisoning cases. Additionally, the students were familiarized with the materials, instruments, and data analysis techniques integral to the diagnostic process. The students demonstrated a high level of engagement, as evidenced by their active participation in discussions and the thoughtful questions they posed.
