Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Continuous Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held an in-person workshop entitled “Consociational Democracy and Its Role in National Security Stability and Enhancing the Economic Environment,” delivered by Lecturer Dr. Fadel Abbas Jabar, a faculty member at the College of Languages / University of Baghdad.

The workshop aimed to explain the concept of consociational democracy and its role in achieving national security stability and strengthening the economic environment. It highlighted the impact of political consensus in supporting development and societal stability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 16, which relates to strong institutions and peace, and Goal 8, which focuses on decent work and economic growth.

The workshop included several topics, including defining consociational democracy and its political and social foundations, explaining its role in managing diversity and achieving national security stability, the impact of political stability on attracting investment and improving the economic environment, discussing the challenges facing the implementation of consociational democracy in Iraq and ways to address them, and emphasizing the importance of cooperation between governmental and community institutions to enhance security and sustainable economic development.

The workshop concluded that consociational democracy is an important tool for enhancing security and political stability, as it contributes to creating a stable economic environment that supports development and investment, which requires strengthening the principles of dialogue, cooperation, and prioritizing the national interest.
