Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held an in-person workshop entitled “Medication Review: Identifying and Preventing Drug-Related Problems (DRPs) in Clinical Practice” delivered by Assistant Lecturer Angham Ahmed Hasan, a faculty member at the Clinical Pharmacy Department.
The workshop aimed to introduce the concept of Drug-Related Problems (DRPs), highlight methods for their identification and prevention, and emphasize the role of medication review in improving therapeutic outcomes and patient safety.
The workshop included several topics, including the concept of DRPs according to Hepler-Strand and PCNE classifications, types of DRPs, factors contributing to their occurrence, and patient groups most vulnerable to these problems. It also addressed the role of the clinical pharmacist in identifying, assessing, and managing DRPs, as well as medication interventions and patient follow-up mechanisms to ensure safe and effective medication use. Furthermore, the workshop discussed strategies for preventing DRPs through the systematic implementation of medication review, emphasizing the importance of medication education and pharmaceutical counseling in improving patients’ awareness and enhancing their adherence to therapy.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of adopting medication review as a routine component of clinical practice for the early detection and prevention of DRPs, promoting patient education, enhancing therapeutic outcomes, and strengthening collaboration among healthcare professionals to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care.
