ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Clinical Pharmacy Department at the University of Baghdad College of Pharmacy was established in 1992 to focus on patient-oriented sciences. This department teaches different essential courses to pharmacy students related to patient clinical outcome and medication safety. For example, ethics in pharmacy practice and research for third year students is required to maintain the ethical practice and research. Clinical Pharmacy and Communication skills for fourth year students which help pharmacy graduates to provide patient counseling, clinical skills, and principle of collaboration with with other healthcare providers as team member in addition to adequate knowledge about most common diseases. Public Health course for fourth year will help pharmacy students to think about primary prevention of disease by raising awareness about health behaviors. Pharmacoeconomics course for 5th year students will help pharmacy students to compare between new and usual medications not only in terms of effectiveness and safety, but also in terms of economic cost on the payers. Applied Therapeutics courses in the fifth year will contribute actively to increase the knowledge of students about the common diseases and their treatments and help them to understand the different roles of pharmacists in collaboration with other healthcare providers within hospitals and community pharmacist review medication orders and prevent medication errors to enhance patient medication safety. Therapeutic Drug monitoring Course for the fifth-year students will help pharmacy students to think about monitoring of high-risk medication in patients to avoid serious adverse drug reactions via measuring the blood level of these medications. The department faculty also supervise the student training in community pharmacy during summer breaks (between 3rd and 4th year as well as between 4th and 5th year). Finally, Hospital Training course for fifth year students in collaboration with the Medical City hospitals can equip pharmacy students with essential clinical skills they need to identify drug-related problems in medication records of inpatients and informing the prescribing to address these potential problems and enhance patient medication safety. In addition to the role of Clinical Pharmacy Department in Bachelor Pharmacy program, it provides core courses for the new PharmD students since 2021 including courses like Pharmacotherapy. Pharmacoepidemiology, Clinical Case studies, graduation project and hospital training. The college awards a postgraduate who graduates from the department academic degrees including Master, and Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Pharmacy. The department has a couple of scientific laboratories such as Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
