Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Guidance and Educational Counselling Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy organized the discussion session entitled “Metformin Rebirth”, led under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Ali Azeez Ali, presented by the students of the Pharmacine Search Club. The session aimed to introduce the new therapeutic role of metformin in many pathological cases. It began with the history of the discovery of metformin, how to manufacture it chemically, and its use as an adjuvant in the treatment of diabetes type II. Then the students presented the latest scientific researches, which emphasized its importance in treating polycystic ovary syndrome and its mechanism of action, as well as its addition as a drug to control epilepsy and its role in weight loss. Published studies showed its therapeutic potential and its effect on cancer, and its role in combating aging was addressed through a study conducted on laboratory animals. At the end of the discussion session, the attendees expressed their gratitude to the Deanship for supporting the holding of scientific, practical, and social activities that are important and beneficial for society.
