Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Scientific Affairs Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held an in-person scientific seminar entitled “Prophylactic Effects of Irigenin on Cyclophosphamide-induced Nephrotoxicity and Myelosuppression in Male Rats in Comparison to Vitamin E,” delivered by Pharmacist Tamara Salem Abed Muhammad, the PhD student at the Pharmacology & Toxicology Department. The seminar aimed to clarify the expected protective effects of irigenin on kidney toxicity and bone marrow suppression induced by cyclophosphamide in male rats in comparison with vitamin E. Also, focusing on the characteristics and medical uses of Irigenin extract in medical research. The seminar included several topics, including knowledge of the medical uses and side effects of cyclophosphamide in kidney and bone marrow, expected protection that can be obtained from the administration of natural antioxidant plants like irigenin in preclinical experiments in comparison to vitamin E. The seminar concluded that identifying the regions where the Irigenin extract is found and exploring the therapeutic benefits of this plant in reducing the toxic effects caused by the administration of the anti-neoplastic agent cyclophosphamide in comparison to the widely used antioxidant, vitamin E, and to determine which is more effective and cost-efficient.
