The faculty of pharmacy discussed the Higher Diploma  thesis tagged “Pattern of Psychotropic Medication Among Inpatient Admitted to Psychiatric Ward in Al Hussainy Teaching Hospital in Kerbala City” by Fadia Riydh Mohammed and his supervisor, Dr. Mohammed Yawuz Jamal, in the Clinical Pharmacy Department. The thesis aimed to assess the psychotropic drug prescribing patterns among the inpatients admitted to the psychiatric ward. Establish the relationship between drug prescriptions and gender, and age groups. and assess the relationship between suicidal ideation and drug abuse among different antipsychotic medications. The thesis included an observational cross-sectional study, in which the primary investigator examined the data sheet for the patients retrospectively for the past three years and extracted the required information according to predesigned questionnaire. The required information concerned age, gender, education level, marital status, occupation, residency, organic illnesses, psychiatric illnesses, smoking, and medication history. Every doctor saw patient as usual, and prescriptions were written according to the doctors’ best knowledge of the illness and the available research. The study involved 165 records. It started in March 2022 and was completed in September 2022. The records were collected from the patients attending Al Al Hussainy Teaching Hospital in Karbala City. The results confirmed that there was a significant association between age and suicidal ideation, with younger patients showed increased association with suicide ideation compared to older patients. Antidepressants showed a significant association with suicide ideation. Gender, and antipsychotic did not associate with suicide ideation. Antipsychotic medication is the most commonly prescribed medication, followed by antidepressant medications. Second generation Olanzapine was the most commonly used antipsychotic medication. Paroxetine is the most commonly prescribed antidepressant medication. There is low rate of polypharmacy (4 medications per patient) in this cohort. For some classes of antidepressants, their gender variation and age specific variations. And younger age and use of antidepressant appears to be associated with suicidal ideation
