Established in 1962, the college library serves faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers from other Iraqi universities. It offers specialized scientific resources in the field of pharmaceutical sciences (pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy and medicinal plants, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, and clinical laboratory sciences) and the overlapping specializations with it. The library spans an area of 276 m², featuring two reading rooms and internet access, along with the latest editions of reputable scientific books.
Technical Procedures Related to Cataloging and Classification
Upon acquiring scientific resources, they are received and registered in an organized log for library books, including all relevant information. Subsequently, technical processes such as cataloging and classification are conducted. The library follows a medical classification system, along with the Dewey Decimal Classification for certain Arabic books. Cataloging relies on the Cutter system for authors. The library also performs ongoing monitoring by printing lists of newly arrived scientific books and distributing them to academic departments for review and future borrowing.
Lending Services
The library offers both internal and external lending services. Internal lending is recorded in a special internal lending log, while external lending involves removing a card from the book to be lent out and recording all relevant information about the borrower, especially for graduate students, including their department, name, type of degree (diploma, MSc, PhD), lending date, and return date.
Library Administration and Policies on Acquisition, Research, Cooperation, and Exchange
The administrative organization of the College of Pharmacy library operates under the dean’s office. It is one of the specialized scientific libraries in pharmaceutical sciences and related fields. The library has a clear policy for developing its collection to meet the needs of the programs offered by the college, supporting the educational process. The college issues administrative orders to assess the library through inventory checks of its holdings and to determine the total number of books and losses over a year, conducted annually to evaluate library efficiency and available materials. Faculty members responsible for courses and educational programs provide regular advice on materials needed to support teaching and learning. Library staff periodically review books and references to ensure their availability to meet course requirements. Acquisitions are made through purchases from private libraries, where lists are received for selection based on topics relevant to pharmaceutical sciences and related fields. The college’s purchasing committee, composed of faculty pharmacists, chooses suitable books. Donations of books also come from medical and humanitarian organizations, and there is collaboration with Arab countries.
