Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Baghdad, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the college’s continuing education unit established a workshop titled “Types of Fish That Are Not Likely to Be Healthy Consumed,” which was presented by lecturer Maadh Qusay Abdulkadir from the department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. As is well known, fish is a preferred food for many countries around the world, and while it may be a basic nutrient for some, it contains some important nutritional elements in its body structure such as unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, and omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for cardiac health and cardiovascular and nervous system functions in addition to the easily digested light meat, or it may constitute the backbone of the economy for other countries. But some sorts of fish may lead to health problems relating to the health due to overconsumption, which continuously causes serious troubles owing to overfishing at the expense of other marine items. These problems are coming either from their abilities to concentrate the harmful substances or contaminants as heavy metals like mercury and lead at its own body tissues due to their high lipid consistency, mass value and long age that form the significant predisposing factors about this matter affecting negatively on the vital functions of human organs that will be later diseased or from huge fishing processes accompanied with certain illegal procedures or post the hunting season that may lead to environmental unbalances and defects.
