The Faculty of Pharmacy/University of Baghdad discussed the high diploma degree entitled “Preparation and In-Vitro Evaluation of Oral Fast Dissolving Film” of Phenobarbital Sodium,” for the student Nada Haider Hasan and her supervisor, Assist. Prof. Lena Murad Thomas in the Pharmaceutics Department. The study aimed to prepare a fast dissolving oral film of phenobarbital sodium as a new dosage form, suitable for use in children or elderly, and in – vitro evaluation of the prepared film. The study involved thirteen formulas of phenobarbital sodium that were prepared by the solvent casting method using HPMCE5, HPMCE15, and pullulan as water-soluble polymers. The prepared films were subjected to different evaluation parameters, like visual inspection, film thickness, folding endurance, drug content, surface pH, in-vitro disintegration time, and a dissolution rate study of the formula. The results showed that formula (F5) plasticized by PEG 400 and containing HPMC E5:HPMCE15 in a 1:2 ratio, and formula (F8) plasticized by glycerin and containing HPMC E15 were the best formulas based on disintegration time, physical and mechanical properties, and rapid dissolution. These formulas showed acceptable value of surface pH (6.5), good physical properties, fast disintegration time>2 and about 100% of drug was released within 120 seconds. The results indicate that phenobarbital sodium was successfully prepared as a fast-dissolving oral film, providing a convenient method for drug administration as a film that can disintegrate within mints and rapidly release the drug.
