The department was established in 1936 to provide the community with scientific specialized staff in the field of pharmcognosy and medicinal plants, and to provide high-quality education that keeps steps with the developments of the specialization and is committed to the ethics of the profession derived from our Arab and Islamic heritage. The department is interested in teaching the graduates different medicinal plants in terms of their classification, shape, active ingredients and pharmacological effects, their synthesis within the plant and linking medicinal products with classified chemical compounds as well as studying other natural sources of medicines. Additionally, the graduate’s knowledge of the importance of products derived from natural plants in the field of biomedicine and evaluation of components effective plants, using methods of extraction and separation of materials in a pure way, using various types of modern technology and plant tissue culture, as well as medicinal and toxic plants in Iraq. The department includes the following scientific laboratories: pharmacognosy and medicinal plants, tissue culture, and postgraduate studies. The college awards postgraduate who graduates from department a certificate: Higher diploma, Master, Doctorate of philosophy in pharmcognosy and medicinal plants.
