The Faculty of Pharmacy at Baghdad University discussed the master’s thesis tagged” Association between Genetic Polymorphisms in the Serotonin Receptor 2C Gene and Metabolic Syndrome in Iraqi Schizophrenic Patients on Olanzapine” by Zinah Abdulhameed Sahib and her supervisor, Assistant Professor Dr. Samer Imad Mohammed in the clinical pharmacy Department on August 7 , 2023. The thesis aimed to determine whether serotonin polymorphisms are associated with the metabolic syndrome caused by olanzapine in schizophrenia and to detect side effects associated with using olanzapine. Thesis topics include The HTR2C promoter region polymorphism was identified by sequencing by implementing the Sanger technique after polymerase chain reaction amplification of the extracted deoxyribonucleic acid. The study concluded that: No correlation was found between the genetic polymorphism and the tendency to develop metabolic syndrome in Iraqi patients with schizophrenia, and the use of olanzapine treatment in schizophrenia negatively affects blood sugar, blood pressure, and lipid levels.
