The Faculty of Pharmacy discussed the Master’s Degree thesis, tagged “Evaluation of the Possible Renoprotective Effect of Omega3-6-9 Against Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Mice”. Saja Kareem Abdulhussen and the supervisor, Assistant Prof. Dr. Ali Faris Hassan, in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology .This study is designed to investigate the possible renoprotective effect of omega 3-6-9 against acute cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in mice by evaluating kidney function markers, some inflammatory markers, and oxidative markers. The result showed that a single intraperitoneal injection with cisplatin produced a significant increase in serum creatinine, uric acid, lactate dehydrogenase, and blood urea nitrogen, a significant increase in renal tissue tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1B, and interleukin-6, and a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and reduced glutathione in renal, with an increased renal malondialdehyde level compared with group 1 (negative control). The mice in Group 3 (treated with triple omega 3-6-9 at dose 50 mg/kg ) ,Group 4 (treated with triple omega 3-6-9 at dose 100 mg/kg) and Group 5 (treated with alphatocopherol (100 mg/kg) prior to cisplatin produced a significant decrease in the serum levels of creatinine ,uric acid ,lactatedehydrogenase and blood urea nitrogen and produced a significant decrease tumor necrosis factor alpha , interleukin 6, interleukin 1b, and produced a significant increase in the reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase in renal tissue with a significantly decreased renal malondialdehyde level as compared with Group 2 (positive control) , observable characteristics of renal sections of the pretreatment groups with triple omega 3-6-9 and alphatocopherol exhibited significant improvement, as determined by the findings of the histological inspection. Overall, this study clearly showed the administration of triple omega 3-6-9 to mice led to a reduction in the toxicity of cisplatin. These results indicate that triple omega 3-6-9 provides protection against the toxicity that is produced by cisplatin in the kidney. One possible explanation for this is that it possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
