Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the Scientific Affair Unit in the College of Pharmacy/University of Baghdad, held an in-person seminar given by the PhD student in the Clinical Pharmacy Department, pharmacist Noor Mohammed Abdulrahman, about the role of SNPs of CYP24A1 on the outcomes of vitamin D treatment in postmenopausal women, which is a part of the PhD study thesis to obtain her PhD degree, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Shatha Hussein Ali. There are several factors that aid in the development of osteoporosis, like genetic and environmental factors. The study involved a number of osteoporotic women who met the inclusion criteria and were diagnosed by a DXA scan. The patients received vitamin D for two months. Laboratory tests were made pre- and post-treatment, and genetic analysis was also done at the end of the study to find SNPs responsible for the non-responsiveness of vitamin D. The study revealed the presence of SNPs responsible for non-response to vitamin D, and the presence of these SNPs can help in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis.
