The faculty of pharmacy discussed the master’s thesis entitled (The Assessment of Knowledge and Effects of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids’ Abuse in a Sample of Iraqi Male Gym Users) by Sura Mohammed Challab and her supervisor, Asst. Prof. Zina Mudhafar Anwer in the Clinical Pharmacy Department. The aims of the study are to detect the effects of anabolic androgenic steroids on biochemical parameters and hormones and compare them with the control group. They also aim to assessment knowledge about the long and short-term effects of these anabolic androgenic steroids.This study included two groups of gym users in Baghdad Al-Russafa; those who had used AAS for at least two months and a control group who had never used AAS before.The result showed a significant decrease in LH, FSH, T3 and TSH serum levels and a significant increase in prolactin and hemoglobin levels. These results are due to the direct effects of AAS on the hypothalamus gland, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland, also increase blood cells. The results also showed a low level of knowledge among gym users about short and long term side effects of AAS like infertility, cardiac disease, acne, and hair loss.
