The College of Pharmacy discussed the MSc thesis entitled “Antihyperlipidemic and Anti-obesity Potential of Hibiscus tiliaceus and Orlistat in Fixed Dose Combination in High Fat Diet in Rats” by Saba Khaldoon Mohammed and the supervisor, Assistant Professor Dr. Shihab Hattab Mutlag at the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department. The study aimed to evaluate the possible anti-obesity effect of Iraqi Hibiscus tiliaceus extract, alone or in combination with orlistat, on high-fat diet-induced obesity in male rats.Treatment with Hibiscus tiliaceus in both doses and in combination with orlistat showed improvement in liver tissue health and decreased the grade of liver damage compared to the induction group. The study showed that Iraqi Hibiscus tiliaceus leaf extract has an anti-obesity effect, and this effect is due to its active ingredients (tannins, terpenoids, and glycosides) and its anti-oxidant effect.Furthermore, Hibiscus tiliaceus leaf extract improves histopathological events in hepatocytes and reduces both microsteatosis and macrosteatosis caused by a high-fat diet.
