Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy, held a workshop entitled “Laboratory Safety,” delivered by Assistant Professor Taghreed Nizam Al-Din Omar, a faculty member at the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department. The workshop aimed to clarify the importance of workers in scientific laboratories being aware of the existence of health and safety standards or how to comply with these standards, and that leniency and indifference to them lead to harmful results. The workshop included highlighting key points for dealing with chemicals in laboratories, including the classification of chemicals according to their types and extent of danger, how to properly deal with them, and the correct storage of chemicals. It was also explained how chemicals are divided in terms of danger into toxic substances, corrosive substances, oxidizing substances, carcinogenic substances, flammable substances, etc. The workshop mentioned personal protective equipment, wrong practices in laboratories, emergency equipment, and the importance of original identification labels. Proper storage and a mechanism for dealing with accidents in the laboratory were also explained.
