Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy, held a course entitled “Practical Methods for Examining and Identifying Organic Compounds,” which lasted for three days from February 27th to 29th, 2024, organized and delivered by Assistant Professor Taghreed Nizam Al-Din Omar, with the participation of Lecturee Azhar Mahdi Jassim and Lecturer Shaima Louay Abdel Hadi, faculty members at the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department. The course included several lectures distributed on the days of the session, in which the first day included a lecture that addressed the theoretical foundations used in methods for diagnosing organic compounds by chemical methods as well as spectroscopic methods. A detailed explanation was given with applied examples of how to benefit from FTIR, mass (NMR 13C and 1H), and methods for calculating percentages. Whereas the second day included a lecture that touched on all the practical steps that must be followed to detect and diagnose organic compounds, including the methods specific to each compound according to its type and how to accurately diagnose the compound after its type has been determined, such as a ketone or a carboxylic acid, citing practical applications for everything mentioned. Day Three included a lecture about all the practical steps of the various decontamination methods, including methods that are combined with the decontamination method and the use of pH titration. She cited some research dealing with this field, including that applied to pharmaceutical preparations. At the end of the third day, an exam was held for the course participants. This is the first course held in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry, and it will be followed by other courses in order to keep up with all scientific developments in theory and practice.
