Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of the Pharmacy, held an in-person scientific workshop about the strategies for protection of β-lactam rings, delivered by Assistant Lecturer Yasir Falih Muhsin, a faculty member at the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department. The workshop aimed to highlight this topic because it affects the effectiveness of this group of drugs, which are of great importance for protecting the beta-lactam ring from beta-lactamase enzymes. The workshop delved into the study of types of beta-lactamase enzymes, causes of bacterial resistance enzymes, shape, and drug binding sites. The most important strategies are the use of Β-lactamase inhibitors, the use of steric shields, and the use of certain amino acids.
