Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Associate Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathum Alkhateeb, the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, held an educational workshop entitled (Drugs are a fleeting beginning…to a fatal end) presented by Dr. Lubna Abdalkarim Sabri, a faculty member in the department of pharmaceutics.The workshop aimed to increase awareness about the problem of illicit drug addiction and warn of its physical, psychological, social, and economic dangers to users and to society in general. The workshop first introduced a brief overview of the concepts of habituation and addiction, as well as the most important reasons for addiction and how to deal with an addicted person. The workshop also included drugs and psychotropic substances in Iraqi law. The workshop focused on ways to prevent drugs addiction to avoid such problem including; spreading awareness in society about the harms of drugs and their destructive impact on the person and society, staying away from friends and gatherings that encourage addiction, training to deal with life pressures and solving them calmly, and treating psychological illnesses, and adhering to physician instructions and their medical prescriptions specially if contained sedative and psychotic drugs.At the end of the workshop, the questions and inquiries of the attendees who suggested presenting more awareness-raising workshops and seminars were answered.
