The Faculty of Pharmacy discussed the doctoral dissertation tagged, ((Comparative study between ferric citrate and calcium carbonate as phosphate binders in terms of effectiveness, side effects and adherence in a sample of Iraqi patients on hemodialysis)) by Reyadh Jassem Abbas and his supervisor, Associate Professor Dr. Fadia Yaqoob Kadhim, in the Clinical Pharmacy Department. The dissertation included examining the effect of ferric citrate in comparison to calcium carbonate in a sample of Iraqi patients on hemodialysis. The dissertation aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of ferric citrate binder in comparison to calcium carbonate among a sample of Iraqi patients on hemodialysis. The results prove that ferric citrate was able to improve serum phosphate levels throughout eight weeks, in addition to its ability to enhance anemia parameters in hemodialysis patients. The current study shows that ferric citrate might be a good alternative as a phosphate binder, and its use might help in controlling iron deficiency anemia in hemodialysis patients.
