Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Sarmed H. Kathem Alkhateeb, the Continuing Education Unit at the University of Baghdad/College of Pharmacy held an in-person workshop entitled “Molecular Biology Techniques and Their Role in Pharmacology”, delivered by Assistant Lecturer Rita Fayyadh Elia, a faculty member at the Pharmacology & Toxicology Department.
The workshop aimed to introduce the principle of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), its methodology, its various types, and its modern applications in pharmacology and medicine.
The workshop included several topics, including an overview of molecular biology techniques. Principle and basic steps of PCR (denaturation, annealing and extension). Types of PCR (conventional, real-time, RT-PCR, multiplex and digital PCR). In addition to its applications in drug discovery, genetic diagnostics, pharmacogenomics, forensic science, and infectious disease detection.
The workshop concluded that PCR is a cornerstone technique in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, accelerating diagnostics, enabling mutation detection, and facilitating the development of personalized therapies, thus representing an essential skill for pharmacy students and researchers.
